UWASNET Hosted Projects

1) National Hand Washing Using Soap Campaign (NHWC)

This is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the governments of Uganda through the line ministries; Ministry of Health (MoH), Ministry of Water and Environment (MoWE) and Ministry of Education and Sports (MoES) and development partners; UNICEF, DANIDA/Royal Danish Embassy - RDE, Water and Sanitation Programme (WSP) – World Bank, German Technical Assistance – GTZ, DFID and prospective development partners. The private companies are Unilever and Mukwano Industries.

The campaign is working in collaboration with NGOs & Community based organisations (CBOs) working in the Water and Sanitation Sector under the Uganda water and sanitation NGO network (UWASNET). The key target group is the under 5 children. But the campaign also targets school going children aged 6-13 years as well as the general population. The primary aim for the campaign is to reduce child mortality among the under 5s through promoting behavioral change. Two (2) junctures are emphasized: Hand washing using soap – after visiting the toilet and before feeding a child. This campaign has attracted many stakeholders including, district local government technical teams, religious leaders, opinion and local government leaders, community development specialists and private sector and the general population.

2) Hygiene Improvement Campaign (HIP)

HIP is a USAID centrally funded 5-year project that is working in Partnership to promote sustainable behavioral change. It has three technical areas that include; Hand washing at key times, point of water use and disinfection and storage and Sanitation.

HIP main objectives in Uganda:

  • Support the Implementation of the behavior change component of the Integrated Hygiene and Sanitation(ISH)
  • Contribute to the strengthening of the capacity of local actors to more effectively promote behavioral change and to
  • Develop and mainstream models for promoting key hygiene practices

HIP Programmatic areas include

  • Integration of Hygiene and Sanitation into Hiv/Aids care and support programming
  • Support integration of hygiene and sanitation into school programming and
